Snormal: A Different Take On Social Media

We find ourselves pointlessly scrolling through social media every now and then, looking through everybody’s highlight reel and unconsciously comparing our day to the beautifully captured day of another. Snormal is a social network that is quite the opposite of its peers, it promotes all things normal and unedited. We spend most of our day doing absolutely normal things, from taking out the trash to making cereal, Snormal aims to normalize normality.

In conversation with founder Benjamin Stokes, we get to learn more about this new and excitingly normal social network.

What is the startup/product about? Give us a brief description of it.

Snormal is a social network for posting about everyday normal thoughts and feelings, instead of the ultra edited life highlights like you’d find on other social networks.

How many co-founders are there? Please introduce them and their backgrounds.

Founder: Benjamin Stokes

I’m a full stack developer and entrepreneur who’s started an ice cream business and cookie dough business amongst other things. Currently I’m the CTO at a small fintech startup in Bristol, UK.

How did you come up with the idea? What motivated you to do this?

It’s not uncommon these days to be slightly fed up with social media. Since I downloaded Instagram in 2014, the enjoyment I get from using it has steadily declined, up to the point now where it’s now uninstalled from my phone.

These days it’s pretty hard to scroll through social media without consuming endless posts from people sharing the best bits of their lives.

Holidays, toned bodies, parties, promotions, Porsches: it’s interesting stuff. But, when all you’re seeing is highlight reels, you might start thinking your life isn’t that exciting, you might even start to feel a bit down about it.

In reality, 99% of what people do day-to-day is very normal, we just don’t talk about it. Sometimes it can feel like you’re the only person who stays in and watches YouTube all evening; that’s not a bad thing – it’s just normal, and normal is cool.

Snormal is a social network for normal people sharing normal things. We want to normalise normality so people don’t feel so alone & alienated scrolling through a feed

Who is your target market? Why do you think your product will appeal to them?

Our target market is Millennials who are fed up with Social Media products.

Snormal is a refreshing take on social media. The platform encourages people to post about their everyday normal life that usually they wouldn’t dare post about. This way normality is normalised, and people might not feel so alone & alienated scrolling through a social media feed.

What are the future plans with the product/startup? Any new features you are planning on?

Snormal was built as part of my year long mission to build tiny programming projects each week. If Snormal gains traction I will continue developing new features. I’d like to add hashtags, direct messages and comments to Snormal, as well as improve the content ranking machine-learning algorithm to show only the best relatable content to Snormal users.
