Foragear: Making Google Searches Easier

Whether you are researching your term paper or just checking out facts on the internet, it can get quite frustrating when you can’t find exactly what you are looking for. Foragear-Quick Search Tool is a chrome extension that will come in handy when you set out to explore the internet. This extension helps you locate key phrases and relevant parts of a webpage making the process of researching a whole lot easier.

In conversation with Foragear’s founder Gideon Tay, we get to know more about this tool and how it can help everyone enhance their Google search experience.

What is the product about? Give us a brief description of it.

Foragear-Quick Search Tool is a chrome extension that enhances the Google search experience by automatically highlighting key phrases (based on the search description) and keywords (based on the search query) in webpages. Additionally, it auto scrolls to the first key phrase when the page opens.

How many co-founders are there? Please introduce them and their backgrounds.

I created Foragear myself as a fun side project. Due to my diverse interests, I do have a rather unusual background. I spent most of my time in school pursuing STEM to the point where I interned at research institutes and have a scientific paper published by Springer Nature. Ironically, my career trajectory seems quite distant from science. I would be studying Economics & Management at the University of Oxford, and have obtained a scholarship at Enterprise Singapore, where I would start my working life helping local SMEs and startups to grow.

How did you come up with the idea? What motivated you to do this?

Being rather intrigued by coding, I started to learn it through multiple online courses. Foragear was built as a final project for one of these courses and gave me the opportunity to translate my learnings into a simple but useful product. I wanted the final project to be meaningful: something that lasted beyond the course and could benefit people. A large pain-point that my friends and I share as students is the time spent scrolling through long webpages and articles trying to find the parts relevant to us. That was how we came up with the idea for Foragear, a light and simple-to-use chrome extension.

Who is your target market? Why do you think your product will appeal to them?

Foragear would be useful for anyone who spends time researching or reading up on the internet. So students surfing the net for material for essays or assignments, researchers conducting literature reviews and workers doing industry or market research online would find it helpful. Foragear helps to speed up the research process by pinpointing the most relevant parts of long webpages and articles to the reader.

What are the future plans with the product? Any new features you are planning on?

I don’t really have future plans for Foragear. It is just a fun side project that I started and I would leave it as it is for the foreseeable future.
